 Cemetery Equipment for ..
Researchers and Funeral Professionals

cemetery

For research expeditions to a Cemetery you’ll need the proper Cemetery equipment. The following are the tools you’ll want to take with you:

Notebook and pens or pencils (always copy down the inscription even though you may take a photograph or make a rubbing).

Carpenter's apron (these have multiple pockets in which to put some of your equipment as you move from tombstone to tombstone).

Gardener's knee pads (you'll be getting down and dirty to clear away overgrown weeds and grass that hamper reading or photographing the inscription).

Garden shears (to trim away the weeds and grass).

Whisk broom (to remove the trimmed weeds and grass

and some of the dirt from the base of the stone).

  Sunscreen.

  Moist towelettes.

Bug repellent (Deep Woods Off is the cologne of true genealogists).

If you're toting a camera, don't forget all your photographing equipment, including extra film, spray bottle filled with water, plastic or nylon brush (never wire), rags and mirror (preferably a full-length one, to light up the stone with reflected sunlight).

General
Cemetery
equipment

Cemeteries have a wide variety of equipment that must be purchased, maintained, fueled, and replaced at the end of its useful life. Included in this list are tractors, trucks, lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, as well as the tools to maintain all of these. Did you know that the average riding lawn mower can cost $18,000 or more and has a useful life of only 8 years?

Memorial and Cemetery Care are two different things although some tools of trade may be the same. There is more to caring for a memorial than placing it on the grave. Once placed, caretakers assume the additional responsibility of individually trimming each memorial on regular intervals throughout the year.

Upright monuments require trimming more frequently than flush memorials. They also increase the mowing time of a particular section by over 50%. Memorials must also be leveled and straighten.
